MS’ version is still worth reading, but just be aware that what you read might not be exactly what’s being said. I’m not saying that everyone should read MP’s version instead. MP’s errors also tend to be more obvious. MP has gotten better over time, though you can still spot errors every now and then. It seems like MS used to be a lot better in terms of translation quality a couple of years back, but the translators have changed since then. I don’t have problems with liberal translations, but it does bother me when the translations give others wrong impressions about the characters and how they speak and behave. There are times when I liken their translations to a kid who tries to hard to appear cool because of the slangs and profanities they like to use and the extra stuff they like to insert. I don’t hate MS’ translations, but the liberties they take with it can be frustrating for me sometimes. MP has a whole list of stuff in there as well. The worst in recent times has been chapter 379… that was atrocious.There was a part of chapter 389 that was bad as well.MS’ translation of chapter 340 gives of a wrong impression of Mavis’ and Zeref’s relationship.Some other issues with MS’ translation that I’ve previously mentioned: Igneel was only saying that he had been napping for a long time, and “shit happens” was never there. It’s the same for this part with Igneel as well. It’s not even a case of making a liberal translation because it’s just the translator adding in something that wasn’t even in the original text. “And disappeared like a fart in the wind” was absolutely unnecessary. Let’s go back a few chapters to chapter 414, because who can forget this classic?Īll Gray was saying was that Zeref left with the book of END and nothing more. According to MS, Natsu tells Lucy to “haul ass”, when what he actually says is “let’s go”. Definitely not the profanities you see in MS’ translations.Īnd one last one from chapter 414, which is another more liberal translation that’s typical of MS releases for Fairy Tail. She doesn’t use any profanities at all… she doesn’t even call Happy stupid! In fact, the worst words that are used in the manga are pretty much just “bastard”, “jerk” and the like. Lucy has a potty mouth in MS’ version (well this goes for pretty much every other character in their translations), but she’s not like that. Right after this, we see Happy scratching Lucy’s wall and Lucy scolding him for that. You can still tell that Natsu is very grateful for Lucy offering him a place to stay, but the actual words he said have been changed. This is one typical example of MS going with a less literal translation. (The last image is from the CR translation.)Īnd we have this panel which made a lot of NaLu shippers happy:Īccording to MS’ translation, Natsu calls Lucy “his angel” when she offers to let him and Happy stay at her house for the night, but Natsu actually calls Lucy “God” instead. What he was actually asking was why Lucy was watching the GMG from the stands alone, and why Fairy Tail didn’t participate in the tournament. When Natsu sees Lucy waiting for him after he leaves the castle, it seems as though he’s asking Lucy why wasn’t the rest of Fairy Tail waiting with her as well in MS’ translation. Let me use chapters 419 and 414 to show some examples. Some are not obvious until you compare them with an alternate translation or the raws. Inaccuracies in MS’ translations tend to be overlooked simply because the text reads more smoothly, so readers think that it makes sense. MP has their fair share of errors, but these tend to be more noticeable and hence they get pointed out more often. The truth is, neither one is better than the other. There seems to be a common misconception that MS’ translations are better because they read more smoothly and they have better quality scans than MP.
